Hi,
My name is Julia Kunikowska, and I am a researcher of cities, rural areas, and the places where they intersect. In 2026, I was awarded a PhD in the humanities, specialising in ethnology and cultural anthropology.
I am a graduate of cultural studies and of philological and cultural studies at the University of Warsaw. I am a recipient of the Warsaw Educational Award and the author of academic and popular-science articles, as well as social and educational projects.
I explore how people co-create the places in which they live, how they experience them, what meanings they attribute to them, and how they respond to top-down processes, particularly those related to modernization. I am interested in the mechanisms of memory and power relations.
My research interests include visual anthropology and the anthropology of memory, tangible and intangible heritage, action research, geoinformatics, and working with archives, both institutional and grassroots.
I love taking action, coming up with ideas, and listening. Apparently, I am quite good at it.
You can read more about me in my Bio.
